Reefer Madness is a 1936 American propaganda exploitation film directed by Louis J. Gasnier that has become a cult hit because of its dated, alarmist views on the dangers of marijuana use and the exaggerated symptoms thereof. It was originally financed by a church group and intended to be shown to parents as a morality tale attempting to teach them about the dangers of their children using marijuana. However, soon after the film was shot, it got into the hands of early exploitation-film icon Dwain Esper, who re-cut the film for distribution on the exploitation film circuit. The film did not gain an audience until it was rediscovered in the early 1970s by Keith Stroup, founder of NORML (National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws), who spotted the movie’s unintended comedic potential and began college-campus screenings.

+++ it goes: same shit, different devil, old song, new words, traded in Giuliani and got Bloomberg. At the time I was scraping through Jeff Jarvis‘ New Media Class at the Legendary CUNY J-School.Sunset Park, where Silent Knight had spent a good part of his youth, was the meeting point on this cruel unrelenting evening. We were scheduled to do a video interview for about 20 minutes and then go about on our ways. The thing that struck me upon that meeting 5 years ago is what strikes me now, this is a person who devotes the best part of his energies, intelligence, soul and creativity to developing the art, craft and form of hip hop. Few artists, journalists, musicians, or even political leaders I’ve met in my 10+ years of journalism have exemplified anywhere near a comparable work ethic. |

Commissioner Of Sewers combines interview and archival material, paintings, and clips of William S. Burroughs's film appearances (including "Decoder" and Gus Van Zant's "Drugstore Cowboy" and "Thanksgiving Prayer") with footage from his last European reading in Berlin on May 9th, 1986 to create a witty and intriguing portrait of the man described by Norman Mailer as "the only American novelist living today who may conceivably be possessed by genius."
